Blindspot Season 1 Thoughts

After finally watching the season finale for Blindspot, I was finally able to come up with an overall rating for the series which ended up aiming somewhere along the lines of Not too bad" at best. This was such a mixed bag of a reception for me, so I decided to split my thoughts in one of my traditional "Pros & Cons" outlets. Hope you enjoy.

Pros:
-A Beautiful Body Art Gallery
Jane's tattoos are appealing to look at (and no I'm not talking about her body in an immature manner for you younger viewers). Honestly, the artistic appeal of seeing the different tattoos on Jane is pretty cool considering that they all have a significant meaning to the plot. I only wish the show would've shown them off a little bit more in a fashion that would have encouraged eagle eyed viewers to look for something hidden in order to decipher for themselves like an interactive puzzle with no end.

-A Body Full of Mystery
Speaking of Jane's tattoos, the overall concept of Blindspot is actually pretty interesting and unique. That's not to say that the badass spy agent-like character trying to gain back their memory is anything considerably new (Jason Bourne anyone?), but the utilization of body art to decode missions and messages surrounding her is a pretty fascinating idea to see executed in a television series. In other words, there's always something new to look forward to in theory which is something any viewer would want to hear regarding an ongoing show...until the tattoos end I suppose.

-The Potential For Expansion
Throughout the show, despite how I feel about the overall entertainment value, there does seem to be attempts in expanding the universe that I enjoyed. Secret government projects slowly being revealed, a secret organization revolved around Jane, and even an assassin organization being shown off once in the show's best episode by far. There is actual effort being placed here to nudge the viewers towards a much bigger world than they started off with in the beginning which is very promising for hardcore fans of the show.

-A Watchable Ensemble
Last but not least are the characters which is arguably the strongest thing about this show. The characters themselves aren't entirely compelling, but as an ensemble, there are dramatic and somewhat interesting plot points that ties everyone together. Everyone has a secret that they're keeping away from someone else on the team and it's sometimes entertaining to see those secrets forcefully thrown at the screen in a disastrous way for the characters to react to during worst case scenarios.

Cons:
-Barebones Minimal
To call Blindspot a "lackluster" experience would be the nicest way to talk about its overall entertainment quality as I did find myself putting a great deal of effort into watching it each week. Even with an interesting premise, the show's perfectly laid out potential in giving us some amazing action sequences or badass character moments with its Jason Bourne-like protagonist goes absolutely nowhere in this season.

The season premiere shows this potential in a fight scene involving the protagonist unlocking her hidden fighting ability from muscle memory in a survival situation, but that's really as far as it has ever gotten. What happens after that? Nothing noteworthy in the action and downright "fun" department. Now, saying this specifically about the show doesn't necessarily state that any show with this sort of premise should feel like a Bourne-like action spy movie, but the Season premiere did slightly rub me in that direction, so I can only speak from that angle as it was the only significant highlight of the series scene-wise.

Overall, Blindspot is a show that started off promising with only a couple of performance hi-cups (forceful emotional expressions from the protagonist) and bizarrely shaky camera movements to invoke a grounded realistic cop drama feel where it simply was not needed whatsoever. However, the show did eventually begin to find its footing after several episodes of blandness feeding on the mental conditioning that something cool was about to happen eventually.

With a strong enough season finale that brings forth something interesting to explore in the next season dramatically speaking, there might just be a bright future for Blindspot after all once the production values on the action scenes are ranked up giving us something visually spectacular to see every now and then. That's really what it all boils down to in the end. When will I finally be able to watch a few episodes in a row and say "Wow, that was fun".

Season Rating: 7/10
