Killjoys Season 2 Premiere Thoughts

"Dutch and the Real Girl"

I simply cannot stress how nice it is to see one of my shows that hasn't been cancelled yet make its big return. Not only did the Season 2 premiere of Killjoys perfectly brought me back into the fun and mysterious world of the series, but it also placed me right back into the story only moments after the finale. This is very much appreciated as some shows may go the other route by instead implementing a time skip which can sometimes throw audiences off in a bad way.

The main cast of characters are as fun and quirky as I remembered and the overall tone of the series still hangs onto that entertainingly over the top science-fiction cheese that not every series can pull off correctly. However, what I appreciated best of all was that the show never lost its alluring dark and dramatic pull when it came to the Dutch and Khlyen story that constantly reminded me that there is indeed a core story arc worth getting invested in.

I also very much enjoyed the inclusion of Pree onboard our crew (already showing some of the comedic angles to look forward to this season) as well as the introduction of Clara who I do hope will pop back up soon again after her badass debut as a Hack mod with a weaponized arm and a pretty twisted past. These are the types of characters that truly gives the show its distinctive science-fiction comic book feel and the reason why I always get excited whenever a new setting in the show's universe is being revealed. It's sort of like watching or reading a Star Wars property and a new planet is being introduced as the new setting for our central characters to explore in some capacity. Your fingers get immediately crossed for a new foe or ally to appear. That's sort of the feeling I get with Killjoys now.

Possible future love interest for Johnny? Hmmm...

There always seems to be a surprise waiting around every corner as far as interesting characters and locations go that we as the viewers only get to see a small dosage of in such a massive world. Luckily, this week's dosage included the character of Clara and her modified body of surprises. You have that pretty cool moment where she quickly connects with Lucy on a digital level and actually builds this sort of fun relationship that I have a feeling will be brought back later in the season. There's no way that the writers would completely leave this character behind after such a striking introduction and standout complimentary piece to Johnny's story. Definitely keep your eyes on that badass robotic arm as I'm sure you'll see it show up in the future.

There's also the surprise team up moment between Khlyen and D'avin which lead to us to a closer inside look at the mysterious mentor's plans as well as the introduction to an even more powerful villain lurking in the background. Khlyen was arguably one of my favorite parts of the first season, so it's great to see him return, but I'm starting to get the feeling that we just might end up seeing a completely different side to him as perhaps an anti-hero surprisingly. So many questions that can probably be answered if only I had some of that green gooey goodness that shows up quite a bit during the episode.

As far as episode highlights go, my favorite moment was, without a doubt, the scene where D'avin talks about Khylen possibly not being the real enemy and that Dutch may actually play a role in his plans due to the vision that he had earlier in the episode. This leads to a pretty awesome scene showing the rest of that memory as we see D'avin watching helplessly as Dutch kills off a a couple of men in a murderous spree for unknown reasons. With a snowy, chaotic, and fiery setting acting as the backdrop of Dutch's villainous-like moment, this was the scene that officially made me say "Yep..I'm definitely on board" as if I wasn't already.

One of my favorite things about Season 1 was the flashback scenes hinting at Dutch's past as an assassin, so it was awesome to see that side of the character being shown off in this type of light again. Only now the context is even more mysterious than before, so I truly feel as though we're about to get some pretty interesting and action pack moments all taking place within D'avin's memories and Dutch's personal flashbacks.

There are so many things worth getting excited for with this new season as far as story arcs, character drama, and hopefully spectacle goes. So as a season premiere overall setting the stage for its fans, I'd call this episode a success aside from a few musical choices that I honestly could have done without. Killjoys is a series that is filled to the bone with potential when it comes to its lore building, so I do hope that this season gets to take more time in exploring this element in a much better executed manner than the previous run did. Here's hoping for an awesome new season for one of the few cool science-fiction TV series out there that hasn't been and hopefully never will be cancelled.

Episode Rating: 8/10
