Killjoys S2 Ep. 5 Thoughts

"Meet The Parents"

This week's episode of Killjoys was by far the most entertaining of the season and possibly the entire series so far. There was a perfect blend of science-fiction intrigue, character drama, visual flare, and arguably the best use of comedy that I've seen on the show so far.

That hilarious banquet scene featuring a very "fish out of water" approach to Johnny failing to keep up with the customs of Pawter's family was comedic gold if I've ever seen it. Watching Johnny constantly struggling to figure out when to sit or stand during the family introductions was not only brilliant as a stand-alone hilarious character moment, but also a nice inside look into Pawter's upbringing and the clear contrasting elements between the two.

As far as weak points go, there is a pretty forgettable and abrupt plot surrounding a fog carrying a virus that freezes up the body on contact. However, the main take away from this specific segment was the path set in order to make Pawter "Lady of the Land" as well as Johnny making a pretty significant transition in the end involving his relationship with Pawter and the warrant. Despite not being a memorable "villain of the week" virus focused episode as some might've expected, I absolutely enjoyed what it helped ushered in character-wise.

On the other side of things, we get a very interesting "switcharoo" story between D'av and Khlyen which also made for its own entertaining "fish out of water" type of story. Watching D'av utilize Khlyen's body and vice versa offered up some pretty insightful character moments such as the introduction and reunion between D'av and his father as well as Dutch being able to finally get some answers out of Khlyen. Not only is it fun to watch actors step into each other's roles perfectly impersonating one another, but it's also really entertaining to see both characters react to a completely different body type.

What makes this particular episode of Killjoys stand out from the rest doesn't just lie within its overall entertainment value, but also in its ability to tie in different story threads altogether presenting a strong central theme. We see different characters having their own individual experiences yet all having strongly similiar elements such as adapting to a foreign environment, reuniting with and forgiving old central figures, and making huge transitioning decisions in the end.

This is the first episode of the series where I can safely say that the writing flared beautifully onto the screen just as much as the visual style. If this is any indication for what's to come down the line then I am beyond the realm of excitement as this season of Killjoys has been nothing short of entertaining and investing since the first episode.

Episode Rating: 9/10
