Finally finished the new and what I assume to be final season of Samurai Jack. The 5th season, which surprisingly made its way onto the Adult Swim platform, was absolutely one of the most beautifully produced and directed seasons of television that I've ever seen since Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad. Yep, that's right, I just made that comparison.
This is the perfect example of a 10/10 season for me with its masterful visual storytelling, breathtaking artistic quality via cinematic imagery of exotic settings and noteworthy sound design, dramatically impactful character development, heart pounding action sequences, an incredible soundtrack, and a finale that resulted in a parade of emotions stampeding through my soul all at once. Suffice it to say, if you were a big fan of the series back in the golden era of Cartoon Network (as I like to call it), then you're definitely getting everything that you loved about this unique world and character story with an even harder edge of grit and dramatic tension than before. Honestly, there are quite a few moments that take place with Jack where I had to stop and think to myself "Wow, that was...this is definitely not for the youngsters".
This was such a phenomenal return as well as a grand finale for one of the most artistically powerful and highly entertaining animated series of our times. Thank you to the returning and new cast members (Phil LaMarr, Mako, Greg Baldwin, Tara Strong, and Tom Kenny just to name a few) and of course series creator Genny Tartakovsky for giving us this masterpiece of a series to begin with. Season 5 of Samurai Jack is by far one of the best things to come out of the animated circles in quite a while and proof that properties from a nostalgic past can definitely make a powerful return in this day and age given the right hands.
Rating: 10/10
