Here are the top easter eggs that I've picked up on during several of my TV viewing experiences and episode reviews. If you'd like to see more (as there are several not mentioned here), then definitely check out the Bonus Content section of my episode reviews where I dive into tons of geek out worthy easter eggs, visual storytelling, and other nods to fans not listed here.
Gotham
Season 2
The Mutants/Solomon Grundy
[S2 Ep.14]
|
Although very brief, Alfred does mention that the name of the gang that they encountered were called "The Mutants" and we do hear them eventually yell out "Solomon...Grundy" to each other which is pretty strange and interesting. What does this mean for Gotham moving forward? |
Joker Graffiti
[S2 Ep.18]
|
Painted alongside Mr. Freeze is what appears to be traditional Joker art which teasingly adds on to what we've been sparingly seeing post Jerome's death. Winking at the audience regarding the iconic Batman villain via imagery is one of the best easter eggs that Gotham has supplied to us so far. |
The Mad Hatter
[S2 Ep.19]
|
With Hugo now creating personas for his test subjects, we do get an interesting easter egg foreshadowing a future Arkham villain as Strange maniacally reads "Alice In Wonderland". It also helps that the phrase "mad as a hatter" gets spoken in an earlier scene. |
Classic Hugo Strange Imagery
[S2 Ep.19]
|
One of the coolest images that will definitely fly over casual Gotham viewers is the subliminal Hugo Strange imagery during Theo's conflicting mind. I was excited to see them utilize the iconic comic book image of Strange's glasses being presented as these hauntingly glaring spotlights peering into his target's mind. |
Gotham's Killer Croc?
[S2 Ep.20]
|
Did we just see Gotham's incarnation of one of Batman's biggest brutes crawling out of the vigilante's iconic rogues gallery? As Selena ventures through Indian Hill, she witnesses the security guards struggling to transport an inmate to their cell who looks quite reptilian in appearance. |
The Court of Owls
[S2 Ep.21]
|
From the moment an owl mask was shown propped up next to the telephone of a mysterious elderly woman, I immediately began to geek out just a tad bit inside. The Court of Owls is a villain that I've been dying to see adapted to the live action world of comic book properties, and although Gotham wouldn't have been my first outlet, I'm now even more excited to see what Season 3 has to offer. |
Season 3
Batman (1966) Audio Easter Egg?
[S3 Ep.15]
|
Although I can't be 100% certain, Ed's cellphone ringer melody definitely sounded like one of the iconic musical cues heard in the 1966 Batman television series. |
Knife Throwing = Batarang Training
[S3 Ep.15]
|
Watching Bruce attempt to master the art of knife throwing while under pressure is a nice nod to the future cape crusader's arsenal of non lethal bat shaped throwing knives. |
Two Face Easter Egg
[S3 Ep.17]
|
As Gordon reads the Riddler's first riddle, the words "I am a man who holds a high position who shows two faces…a criminal and sometimes a politician". As a Batman fan, these words immediately scream "Two Face" considering the villain's persona and history. Gordon even says the words "Two Face politician" as a nice button seal at the end. |
Ra's Al Ghul Easter Egg
[S3 Ep. 20]
|
In one of Gohtam's greatest name drops yet, the Shaman tells Bruce to seek out the "Demon's Head" to fulfill his destiny which fans will recognize as being the title given to none other than Ra's Al Ghul. |
Batman Begins
[S3 Ep.22]
|
In possibly the greatest visual easter egg on the show, we see Bruce Wayne on his first outings as a vigilante sporting a ski mask and black jacket. This is a great callback to both the animated classic Batman film "Mask of the Phantasm" and Nolan's Batman trilogy where the character utilizes a similiar attire for his pre-bat suit endeavors. |
The Origins of Catwoman
[S3 Ep. 22]
|
The Season 3 finale of Gotham introduces Selena Kyle's acquiring of the iconic Batman villain's weapon of choice. It's a pretty cool and brilliant concept to have the Tabitha character (Tigress) be the one to help usher in the Catwoman persona. |
Cyrus Gold/Solomon Grundy
[S3 Ep. 22]
|
One of the most surprising character reveals of the finale takes place during Butch's arrival at the hospital. The doctors discover that the mobster's name is actually Cyrus Gold which directly teases the forthcoming of none other than Solomon Grundy of the same identity. |
Legends of Tomorrow
Season 1
Damien Darhk's Appearance
[S1 Ep.2]
|
Damien Darhk briefly appears during a weapons auction that takes place in 1975 which alludes to his immortality considering his present day appearance on Season 4 of Arrow. |
Justice Society of America Name Drop
[S1 Ep.16]
|
One of the biggest name drops in the entire CW comic book universe comes with the Season 1 finale cliffhanger where Rex Tyler randomly shows up and name drops the "Justice Society of America" to the team. |
Season 2
Arrowverse Hero Easter Eggs
[S2 Ep.16]
|
In the Legion of Doom's alternate reality, we get to see the masks of several vigilantes and superheroes from the various CW DC properties brilliantly displayed in Damien Darhk's trophy showcase. |
Legion of Doom Headquarters
[S2 Ep.16]
|
Words cannot describe how excited I was as a fan of the classic Super Friends cartoon to see the iconic Hall of Doom structure in all of its glory. This may just be the coolest thing that any of the CW DC series have ever done visually speaking. |
The Flash
Season 2
Earth-2 DC Universe Easter Eggs
[S2 Ep. 13]
|
During our first trip to Earth-2, we see that the alternate Barry Allen has possible ties to Justice League members. On his telephone, the names Bruce, Hal, and Diana are shown which DC fans will recognize as the identities of Batman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman. There are also mentions of Atlantis which alludes to the existence of Aquaman. |
Season 3
Earth-38: Supergirl's Earth
[S3 Ep.11]
|
"During Cisco and Gypsy's multiverse shifting battle, we get to see Earth 38 as a temporary backdrop via the CATCO building (Kara's workplace). As a fan of Supergirl, you can only imagine how happy I was to see this subtle crossover implimented. It's moments like these that makes me appreciate the interconnectivity of the CW DC universe" |
Arrow
Season 6
Bruce Wayne Namedrop
[S6 Ep. 2]
|
Much like Supergirl, the Arrowverse has always tiptoed around Batman's questionable existence. However, for the first time in the shared universe, his secret identity gets a spotlighted verbal mention. During a press conference about the Green Arrow's identity, Oliver Queen mentions Bruce Wayne as a sarcastic response to who the Green Arrow can easily be through photo doctoring. |
Supergirl
Season 2
Batman Easter Egg
[S2 Ep.20]
|
There are a few somewhat subtle Batman easter eggs that can be found during the course of Supergirl. However, there is one in particular that just screams "BATMAN!". During James' and Wynn's discussion about Guardian's fractured image, he describes himself as "A big guy in a scary mask just like Clark's friend". Wynn then responds with a pointy ear gesture saying "Oh you mean..?". |
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Season 3
Civil War Crossover
[S3 Ep.20]
|
The Civil War situation is spoken about on the news during the opening scene in the bar. You can also see "Buck's" in the background as a possible nod to Bucky. |
Civil War & Avengers Easter Egg via News Article
[S3 Ep.20]
|
As Coulson reads through a newspaper article about Peggy Carter's death (in connection to the events of Civil War), the Sokovia Accords, Hydra, and the Battle of New York are all mentioned in the article |
Season 4
Johnny Blaze Cameo
[S4 Ep.6]
|
As Robbie Reyes recounts his Ghost Rider origins to his brother and Daisy, we see a mysterious man on a motorcycle rescuing Gabe right before resurrecting Robbie as an answer to his desperate call for help. It is here where we see Johnny Blaze as the Ghost Rider transporting the spirit of vengeance to Robbie. |
Luke Cage
Season 1
Hammer Tech Weaponry
[S1 Ep.1]
|
Hammer Industries (Justin Hammer's company) is presented as the engineers behind the weapon tech contraband during Cottonmouth's conversation with Domingo about his new arsenal shipment. Justin Hammer was one of the central villains of Ironman 2. |
Luke Cage's Classic Costume
[S1 Ep.4]
|
For a brief moment, Luke unintentionally steals a shirt and pants that, along with his headband and arm braces, takes the image of his classic comic book attire. |
Legion
Season 1
Professor X's Iconic Pose
[S1 Ep.4]
|
David's body gesture when attempting to channel his powers directly references one of comic book's most iconic characters, Professor X. This of course makes sense considering the character's family roots to which the series have been keeping quiet about thus far. |
Professor X Vs. The Shadow King
[S1 Ep.7]
|
David visually breaks down the history of the Shadow King and his father's battle, and through this brilliantly displayed chalkboard presentation, we can clearly see a chalk made animated version of Charles Xavier. |
Professor X's Iconic Wheelchair
|
In another awesome Professor X easter egg, there's a quick "blink and you'll miss it" moment where the professor's wheelchair is shown during a flashback sequence. |
