Legends of Tomorrow S5 Ep. 9 Highlights

"Zari, Not Zari"

Legends of Tomorrow continues to be the most entertaining entry of the Arrowverse's post-Crisis line up to watch. This season has delivered everything that a fan of the series could possibly ask for from hilarious and fun self aware nods and Easter eggs, individually cool segments of superpowers being utilized, Constantine frequently proving why he remains one of the greatest things to happen to the Arrowverse franchise, and of course Legends' fully embraced over the top sense of humor. This episode follows up on that while also introducing a new high stakes villain for our team of heroes to tackle. Let's check out what I believe to be the episode's biggest highlights.

Mick's Montage of Fatherhood

Mick has always been the spotlight of comedic relief on the Legends series, but this episode did something slightly refreshing with the character. Instead of using his brutal, selfish, and hyper violent sensibilities for individual funny segments, they took the character into a much more adorable and "loving" direction delivering a new angle on his character traits. This whole father-daughter side plot honestly had me worried that the show would potentially overstep their unique, whacky, and sometimes brilliant "don't care" attitude within the Arrowverse's traditional superhero story beats. Fortunately, this episode proves that the writers know exactly how to keep things in line with the show's tone without going too overboard giving us some genuinely charming and funny scenes with Mick being present in different times of his daughter's life. My favorite being the Heatwave novel (by Rebecca Silver) reading to his toddler daughter.

Zari Meets Zari

This one's a bit brief, but I did enjoy the idea of the new timeline Zari having encounters with the original Legends version. I think it's cool that our classic Zari still exists within the totem's dimension making it a little less tragic that we "lost her" and also giving Legends its own version of what Supergirl and Flash are currently doing with their Earth-Prime/Post Crisis doppelgänger fusion characters. If this means that we can have two versions of the same character on the show while exploring more of the air totem's world and the totems themselves as other dimensions then I think Legends just opened up a fascinating new corner of the Arrowverse worth exploring. In addition to that, with Behrad's tragic death, what does this mean for Zari's existence if we're to assume that he literally got cut out of history moving forward? Lots of interesting possibilities however I would be pretty bummed out if we do end up losing such a great side character in Behrad.

Legends Introduces Atropos

The series has never won me over entirely with their gallery of season villains (except for the Legion of Doom which is essentially a uniting of Flash and Arrow villains). However, Atropos might just be a potential contender for the show's first legitimately great unique entry into their rogues. Though the character's personality and screen presence leaves much to desire so far, her capabilities, mythology, and ruthless killing machine nature makes her feel genuinely threatening. Giving an almost Terminator-like feel, I love how Atropos just shows up, brutally murders a bunch of people in a concert, kills someone by just revealing her true form, manages to take down both Sara and Constantine on her own, and literally cuts Behrad out of existence stating that he doesn't belong. Now THAT...that is a great first impression of a season villain.

Again, the actress isn't necessarily doing anything noteworthy but her character's high stakes power level (she's literally a God for crying out loud) is definitely felt in her actions. My only nitpick is that, considering her greek god mythology background, I feel her character design can be a slightly bit more interesting, but I do like the bone daggers that she's able to summon invoking something ancient. It's not quite on the level of Supergirl's Reign which truly annoyed me from a lore building to character design execution perspective, but I do feel Legends has the production resources to make a deadly Greek God look...well more awesome than she does here. By the way, a "big bad god-like villain hunting down pieces of jewelry to bring together something spectacular" seems like familiar ground. Maybe it's just me.

For Supernatural Fans, I Am Happy For You

Ah yes, this episode of Legends did something huge for Supernatural fans showing off what I assume to be an iconic prop from the series (the car), mentioning the show by name along with its core characters, and even having the crew members from the show become zombies in the episode. As someone who has never watched Supernatural, even I got a little excited at the thought of Legends fulfilling some fanboy's dream somewhere in the world watching. It's sort of like how I felt about what Crisis did for Smallville fans by showing Tom Welling on the Kent farm even though I've never seen the show. I still got chills at the thought of hardcore fans reacting to what was taking place geeking out as I have in the past with other eater eggs. I do find it funny that Sara is a huge fan of the show. Love the fact that she's concerned about Season 15 of the series not shooting if the crew are dead.

Bonus Thoughts

1. Sara's Invulnerability To A God?

What's the deal with Sara being able to recover from staring into the true form of Atropos? Hmmm. I have a theory that involves the previous totem situation or potentially her resurrection from the Lazarus Pit, Constantine tying her soul back together during Season 4 of Arrow, and being a paragon from Crisis. However, I may be way off on this theory. Only time will tell, but I am very intrigued with the possibilities that can come from Sara being revealed to being more than just team captain, a former League of Assassins member, and the Canary. Additionally, now that we see that the hell sword that Damien used to send himself back to Hell that Sara and Charlie used against Atropos does work...to an extent. Giving Sara this magical blade to fight Atropos is an awesome idea if they decide to perhaps upgrade it even further and utilize her league training more so when fighting in the future.

2. Constantine Continues To Be Legends's Greatest Ingredient

There's a funny and pretty cool bit with Constantine scurrying around on the forest grass to find specific herbs to rushingly conjure up a spell to fight Atropos. It's badass that John has the knowledge to utilize his quick wits and surroundings knowing every ingredient needed for a specific spell. It's also hilarious to see him literally ducking under Sara and Atropos punching and kicking to crawl around for ingredients. This blend of comedy and badass heroics is the perfect representation of what Legends looks like at its finest which is why I feel Constantine's major inclusion has become the show's best idea yet.

Episode Rating: 8/10
