"The Children of Krypton"
Well, it looks like we have yet another pretty entertaining and geek out worthy episode of Supergirl for the new season making me very happy to say that I've stayed onboard with Season 1 through all of its ups and downs to get here. Let's take a quick look into what made the second episode of Season 2 such a fun experience overall.
Character Moments
The character driven scenes regarding Kera's journey into becoming a reporter was a nice refreshing step into something new for the series and for the character itself (alongside a few comedic moments sprinkled in). I'm starting to get a Clark/Perry White or Peter Parker/J Jonah Jameson vibe going on here already with Kera and her now boss. It's ironic how some of the most hilarious comic book alter ego moments usually involve a hero interacting with their grumpy old boss. I look forward to seeing this dynamic boss-employee relationship build for the rest of the season.
The conflict introduced between Superman and J'onn in the previous episode not only came to a dramatic peak here at one point but also settled itself in a satisfying way towards the end which I very much appreciated. I even found myself getting invested with the Cat Grant/Kera scenes which is a bit surprising considering the fact that I've never really gotten into that character whatsoever in the past. I believe it's the idea of her leaving her company behind showing the audience that the series is indeed diving into a transitional period regarding its characters and story lines that I admired quite a bit.
Also, I do have to point out the "geek out" moments that I had during the beginning of the episode where we see Superman and Supergirl saving the day multiple times. I honestly believe this to be my favorite live action version of Superman so far. Everything from the sense of humor, charm, and commanding presence when needed is all shown within these first two episodes of the new season.
This Week's Obstacle: Metallo
We also have our traditional "villain of the week" situation which, although Metallo was never a villain that I liked in past iterations, I did enjoy the more simplistic presentation given to him (or to them in this case) here in this universe. Sometimes I have to remind myself that this is a television series after all and we're simply not on the levels of movie quality spectacle when considering character designs and action sequences as of yet. However, this episode does not shy away from showing off Superman and Supergirl in action as they face off against Metallo in a nicely paced fight scene that transitioned between both fights back to back.
I also have to point out how awesome it was to see Martian Manhunter and Alex teaming up with the two Kryptonians as it perfectly paired off the two to match the conflict and drama that they held with each other. This is the sort of thing that I like to see as far as villains sometimes being utilized in a way that perfectly compliments the issues taking place within the personal lives of the heroes. It also helps that the fight scene itself was done well enough showing how powerful the effects of Kryptonite can be on both Superman and Supergirl as well as a nice tease for the types of powerhouse team-ups that we can see on the series.
Overall Thoughts
In the end, this episode has shown me yet again that this season is indeed stepping up as far as overall quality goes. Everything from the dramatic and comedic character moments, impressive visual FX (the flying sequences have exponentially improved), action choreography, and storytelling to a degree has all been elevated to match the caliber that the series should've had from the beginning. This is the Supergirl that I wanted to see from Season 1, and if these past two episodes are in any indication or tease for what's to come, this is the Supergirl that fans are gonna want to tune into to watch every week. I look forward to seeing what the future brings for Supergirl as it's starting to look pretty bright from here.
