Supergirl S2 Ep.4 Quick Thoughts

"Survivors"

This week's episode of Supergirl was by far my favorite of the new season so far. The full introduction of Miss Martian was interesting and emotionally enthralling during her scenes with J'onn. Since the first season, I've always found the more story driven Martian Manhunter moments to be the most powerful and best executed on the show and this episode in particular continues that line of success.

Every scene with J'onn struggling to learn about and bond with Megan came with an emotional realization that I was watching two of the last species of an extinct race having conflicting ideals. This entire episode centers primarily around that concept as we also see this same theme running through with Kara and her struggle to interact with Mon-El due to their planetary and family's history.

The alien fight club concept was a nice touch as I'm always excited to see some sense of world building being introduced in shows and films that calls for it every now and then. This fight club insert not only introduced a new setting for several super powered characters to stem from in the future, but also presented a much darker corner of National City.

The fight scenes were pretty decent as were the visual and practical FX on the different aliens shown. The flashback to Mon-El leaving the destruction of his home planet was definitely the most visually impressive as far as spectacle goes and a great inside look into the character's tragic background.

With a nice happy ending tying things up together with the J'onn/Megan and Kera/Mon-El conflict, I was very pleased to see an episode with a more than satisfying full experience putting a nice seal on character dramas introduced while still having time to deliver the comic book spectacles that viewers expect.

However, just when the credits were about to make their presence known, the ending White Martian twist reveal happened opening up a whole new can of speculations for us to ponder over before the next episode hits. Talk about a nice cliffhanger to get us excited for what's to come. Overall, this was surely the most fulfilling episode of the new season as it delivered completely on almost everything that it set out to do (with a minor nitpick towards some of the CGI needing a bit of polishing up during certain scenes).
