Gotham S2 Ep. 5 Thoughts

"Scarification"

Well, it looks like Gotham has finally introduced the first villain in its rogue gallery that actually placed a smile of geeky proportions onto my face without feeling like forced fan service. This was by far one of my favorite episodes of the series so far due to several reasons. I absolutely loved the implication of Firefly's debut (a character that has only been shown on Arrow so far in terms of live action incarnations) and the suit was definitely the best out of the two series which was shocking to me.

We also had The Penguin, who was one of my top major issues of the previous season in terms of of overacting performances, but something amazing and pretty fascinating took place during this episode particularly with his character.

There's a scene involving Penguin simply listening to a woman speak about a significant piece of Gotham's history that truly transported me from watching a slightly above average comic book TV show to watching a true to form show revolving around the city of Gotham. There's no action taking place whatsoever and Penguin does absolutely nothing but sit on his throne and listen to this lady speak, but the atmosphere completely flew out of the screen screaming "Batman universe!" to me in a very profound manner. The director took the time to let the scenery and tone take over the scene which resulted in a visually beautiful and engaging moment altogether.

The ending of the episode was also done amazingly well setting up what I assume to be this season's big villain with Theo Galavan planning to kill Bruce. I'm actually really warming up to his character overall as this antagonist that is worth keeping an eye on even though I have no recollection about his character counterpart from the comics and/or animated series which is a great thing in terms of mystery.

Surprisingly enough, in just one episode, they did everything that the previous season failed to do such as setting up amazing villains, atmospheric scenes that made me feel like I was watching a show set in the Gotham universe, and an ending that left me with full of anticipation in seeing the next episode. Overall, this is definitely the most successful episode of the show so far and I hope the rest of the season can follow it up in a manner that is just as detailed and beautifully woven.

Rating: 9/10
