This week's Supergirl honestly didn't do it for me. Here's what worked and didn't work:
First off, let's just dive into the most significant flaw in this episode being the terribly executed villain due to horrendous character development. I literally yelled out "Noooo!" when "Livewire" opened up her eyes in the hospital with the electricity surging through her because of the awfully high levels of cheese splattered on the screen. I know the show is suppose to have a family friendly-like tone which I'm fine with, but that scene specifically completely took me out as it simply didn't fit the overall tone of the show in my opinion.
There's family oriented light heartedness and then there's a special cheese covered corner of the universe where someone would find shows like Power Rangers and Arnold Schwarzenegger's quotes from Batman & Robin. The Livewire character in this episode felt as though she was ripped completely out of that universe and randomly tossed in here to fight Supergirl. I honestly felt a little conned out of a potentially cool minor villain especially with the whole terribly done and illogical tv screen electricity background speeches that she randomly was able to accomplish (the amount of cringe-worthy cheesiness in those scenes were almost difficult to watch).
The mother-daughter drama was not too bad and I did enjoy the secret sharing moments between them. I actually really got into the foster parents' flashback sequences leading up to the nice little twist with our suspicious red eye glowing general. Honestly, who is this guy suppose to be? This is the one time I decided not to dip into the lore of the comic book character that I'm watching, but I may just be tempted to give thee old wiki page a peek because it's starting to get to me (that's actually a good thing as I at least have something worth looking out for in the future).
Five episodes in and the only scene worth mentioning as far as visuals and action goes is the plane rescue scene from the pilot (such a shame considering the character and universe utilized in this series). Livewire's powers are cool to watch as she transports herself through electrical wiring (mainly because I'm a fan of the Infamous games), but the actual fight scenes were lackluster yet again. I'm starting to lose just a little bit of faith in the action set pieces for this show, but I am aware that first seasons in spectacle heavy series can be a little tricky as the studio is still learning as they go. Let's just hope Red Tornado's episode can shed some light on a very dull sense of entertainment value here.
Overall, this episode, much like most of the series thus far, was a mixed bag with the non-comic book elements being done better than the main reason I came aboard this ship in the first place. What I'm hoping for is a massive step up in the action/visual FX department, but also the quality of new villains that appears each week. There's still hope in this show and it's definitely not a lost cause but the cracks are starting to show themselves slightly which is a terrible thing this early on. Supergirl is really gonna have to start pulling out the big guns now.
