Gotham S3 Ep. 8 Quick Thoughts

"Blood Rush"

This week's episode of Gotham was a pretty solid installment for the new season with a fun new character direction introduced with Captain Barnes. It's also nice to see Gordon back on the force as it brings back some of the more  stronger parts of previous seasons as far as entertaining character interactions go (primarily between him and Bullock).

The love triangle conflicts presented currently are not too distracting in comparison to other comic book TV series that places them in the forefront in ways that drowns out other more significant plot points running alongside. It's all entertainment filler here and the writers know and present them as such. This is why I have absolutely no issues with the Ed-Penguin-Islabella stuff or the moments with Jim, Lee, and Mario once I know that everything else will be moving at a smooth enough pace to enjoy and follow through (which they have been so far).

Overall, this was a pretty solid episode that could've very well feel like a side plot working itself out with Barnes being introduced as a new villain in the making, but in a way that is both entertaining and interesting for the most part. Just when I thought the Tetch name was done for, they still find some means to keep that character's presence alive by using it to bring forth a new antagonist for the series. Gotham continues to positively surprise me with its storytelling overall. However, I am honestly starting to wonder when we'll be shifting back to the other major story lines now that Tetch is officially behind bars. The Court of Owls? The Indian Hill escapees? So much to look forward to this season.

Bonus Content:

1. Barnes - The Judge
With Barnes now seeing himself as Judge and Executioner, I was immediately taken back to the classic Batman animated series that introduced a similiar villain. It would be pretty interesting to see just how far they take this new direction for the character. Perhaps even giving him a judge outfit of sorts? Probably not.

2. Creepy Imagery from Tetch's Influence
Every now and then, Gotham would pull something out of their visual FX department that is brief, but highly effective and amazingly executed. The bizarre imagery that Barnes experience seeing the several "criminal scum" of Gotham was pretty striking and a nice way to see what Barnes is going through as he embarks on this new vigilante-like quest.

3. The Riddler's Hue
Every now and then we'd see some form of The Riddler's iconic color flashing its way around Ed, but the scene where he walks into Isabella's home to finally confront her about his decision was probably the most profound yet. Perhaps this is a strong image of foreshadowing now that she's officially out of the picture. All it takes is one big push to set the Nygma name back on the rogues gallery list right?

Episode Rating: 8/10
