Legends of Tomorrow S2 Ep.5 Thoughts

"Compromised"

After last week's emotionally charged episode surrounding one of the most darkest and horrible eras in American history (with a zombie twist strangely enough), it was nice to see the series take on the more colorful, fun, and fittingly dramatic tone that I've enjoyed whenever the show is at its peak of quality. This was by far my favorite episode of the new season so far as we get to see Damien Darhk return as the center piece villain of the week (which was one of the best villain decisions ever made for the series in my opinion). We also get to see Martin Stein interacting with his naive younger self again which of course brought forth its own heartfelt and entertaining character moments as well as Ray and Rory's continued building relationship.

As far as Damien Darhk goes, I've been consistently enjoying the way in which the writers have utilized him so far in the Legends universe as a means of exploiting his immortality to have him show up as an obstacle through different periods of time. Sure, one can say that he is essentially this season's Vandal Savage, but I'd easily argue that Damien has a completely different story trajectory and significant position on both Arrow and Legends. Neal McDonough has been absolutely killing it in the role as the constantly smirking and confident villain ever since his debut on Arrow, but I strongly feel that his character will be better utilized here what with the infinite amount of space to let his character breathe as well as the historical context given via the time traveling model.

It's been a complete joy to see him becoming more fleshed out amongst the Arrowverse as a potential threat to history (via The Reverse Flash), a constant threat on his own merits through time, and a dramatic story arc focused on revenge and justice exclusive to Sara. This is arguably one of the best utilized villains on the series thus far as he brings several possibilities to the table for the Legends team, but it also helps significantly that the character itself is a joy to watch thanks to Neal's villainously charming wit. Sadly, there aren't many adversaries within the series' rogues gallery that legitimately stands out, but that unfortunate track record just might change for the better this season if we're to believe that Darhk will stick around for a while.

Darhk aside, what also made this episode such a satisfying viewing experience overall was the fact that everyone had their shining moment of reflection or action to some degree which is always great to see in an ensemble series. We see Sara battling the blood lust to avenge Laurel's death against Damien (something that was introduced early on in the series) which lead to her moment of absolution in the end. We also have Ray struggling to find his place in life after losing his Atom suit by attempting to fill Snart's shoes via Rory's suggestions. Again, another situation that leads to a satisfying conclusion with both characters coming to a strong realization in the end that will push things forward for their characters. These are the types of impactful and nicely delivered character moments that I wish to see more of on the show.

With a fun sense of 80's atmosphere (primarily in the opening scene with Darhk standing next to an 80's sports car dressed in all white), a great use of a potentially amazing season villain, and a forward focused pace with the ensemble cast overall, this was by far the most fulfilling episode of the new season in its current state. I only hope that we get to see more episodes like this where things aren't feeling stagnant or forced in for the sake of filling up time which the previous season suffered from. If this week's episode is any indication, Legends of Tomorrow can very well be a series that is worthy enough of being on par with the more popularly highly praised titles of the genre.

Bonus Content

1. Lance Hendricks As Obsidian
Not sure if it's a coincidence that one of the greatest 80's star actors just so happen to guest star on an episode that takes place in the 80's, but you'll hear no complaints from this "Aliens" fan. It's also nice to see one of the JLA members being utilized in another era of time therefore adding an extra layer to Vixen's story.

2. Damien Darhk's Legacy: The Rise of Hive
This is one of those moments where it highly benefits to be a fan of the other Arrowverse series. Seeing Hive soldiers standing next to Darhk as well as the constant mentions of his bleak future was one of my favorite easter eggs on the show. Will Darhk change his future and what effect will it have on Arrow? So many questions now.

3. Eobard Thawne's Ultimate Role?
As I mentioned with the previous point of interest, it truly does benefit to be up to date with the other series as Flash fans will be intrigued by Eobard's presence here. So many questions surrounding what Thawne is hoping to achieve with Damien. It's interesting to point out the message that Barry sent to Rip Hunter which we're still kept in the dark with. Perhaps we're witnessing the rise of a certain villainous organization. Legion of Doom anyone?

4. Darhk's Fascination With Relics
As we've learned from Arrow, Damien has a history of collecting and/or utilizing magical relics, so it was a nice touch for Legends to keep that consistency with the character in this episode.

5. Citizen Steel Is Becoming Season 1's Atom
To avoid confusion, what I'm referring to with the title point of interest is the concept of Citizen Steel now slowly becoming the spotlight visual FX driven powerful character with the charming yet goofy personality. Sounds familiar?

Episode Rating: 9/10
