Emerald City S1 Ep. 6 Quick Thoughts

"Beautiful Wickedness"

So far, Emerald City has been somewhere along the lines of "watchable at best" and legitimately intriguing, but never truly making an impact on myself entertainment-wise. However, this episode may just be the first to break that track record as they finally dove into the Wizard's origin story. This specific segment of the episode was pretty fascinating from a character development standpoint as well as a cool way of digging into the lore of Emerald City. Watching the Wizard being presented as a simple guy wanting to make a name for himself in the realm of Science then finally being given the opportunity to start fresh in a newly discovered world was pretty compelling.

We also learn where Dorothy originated from as well as her parents' identity which was a cool bonus reveal, but strangely didn't feel like a huge deal in the episode. Alongside the Wizard's beginnings in Oz, I also really enjoyed the reveal of Lucas' backstory which additionally forwarded the mystery of Sylvie's connection with him. Sylvie has been a great addition to the show as being the big question mark character with visually striking magical abilities. It'll be interesting to see where they take her moving forward considering the ending's implication of her possibly being a weapon. So, as an origin story/character spotlight episode, this was by far the most solid entry in the series thus far.

My only nitpick for the show comes with the fact that I still haven't been able to get fully invested in some of its side characters. None of major witches have done anything of interest to me nor has the story revolving around Tip and her now broken relationship with Jack (or is he considered the Tin Man now). However, I have been liking Jack's new role alongside Lady Ev primarily due to how much I've completely admired the design of her character's various appearances. This is a character that has immediately won me over by her visual presence alone, so despite Jack's dullness as an individual onscreen item, I do get to see Lady Ev in all of her exotic and fascinating glory through his interaction scenes.

This was the first episode to truly make me feel as though I had something to look forward to in the future. With characters finally beginning to get developed in engrossing ways, a tension bringing war on the horizon, and a genuinely shocking twist of events towards the end, Emerald City is finally shaping into something that is slightly above "watchable at best".

Bonus Content:

1. Lady Ev's Majestic & Exotic Design
Being an admirer of amazing character design, Lady Ev immediately became one of my favorite characters to appear on the show. Her personality alongside her highly majestic presence reminded me of something right out of an epic fantasy adventure game or anime series.

Episode Rating: 8/10
