"Luthors"
Although the past couple of episodes leading into this week's entry was rather dull, I can happily say that things are beginning to look up for the girl of steel. Minus the bizarrely integrated character introduction at the end (and yes I am aware of the strange nature of that character's traits from the comics), this was a pretty solid episode overall.
The Luthor family drama subplot was a little weak during the beginning of the season, but this episode definitely elevated its weight to the overall story. What I do believe we're seeing here is an interesting villain arc slowly building whenever the Luthors are present onscreen. Where Cadmus fails to present itself as a worthy season villain for Supergirl, there is the iconic Superman vs. Lex Luthor dynamic carefully making its presence known bit by bit.
It's nice to see Metallo finally being put to rest as I never really liked the design, but more importantly, it would be nice to have his death conjure up a more comic accurate iteration in the future. He was never necessarily a weak villain of the week, but he was forgettable at the end of the day. I do believe that issue can somewhat change if we get to see the more sinister robotic version from the source material down the line.
The relationship conflict between Kara and friends was nicely executed and never felt too ridiculous or forcefully inserted. Her drive to keep her friends close and protected shines through during her arguments with them so it all made sense from a character perspective.
The Mon-El love interest component however is where things can possibly spin out of control for the show. I'm completely fine with Supergirl having a new romantic relationship, but I'd be crushed if it ends up changing the pace of the season moving forward in a negative way. Where we've gotten serviceable villains of the week sprinkled around with a couple of great story arcs and character moments recently, I can easily see the writers struggling to make room for an unnecessary soap opera-like story between the two characters. I'm hoping that they can possibly go in the way of the Alex-Maggie story as far as adding a genuine sense of emotional and dramatic weight to the relationship without feeling as though it's sacrificing screen time for something more important.
We'll just have to wait and see, so fingers crossed that we're not about to step into the downward spiral slope of storytelling for the series. Remember, we still have two persistent aliens hunting down Mon-El as well as a huge roster of cosmic and/or man made villains to choose from. Let's just hope that we're in for something special with the remaining half of the season.
