"Chapter 1"
Finally caught the first episode of FX's Legion and it was exactly as mind bending and visually alluring as I imagined. The central character, David, is a fascinating character study worthy of exploring and the supporting cast around him bring something distinctive and meaningful to the table. The performances are solid all around the board with a well deserved spotlight on Dan Stevens in the titular role. The visual style is eye catching to say the least and the editing is to be awarded here for its amazing way of intentionally playing with the viewer's perception of time and space.
The character interaction scenes are highly entertaining throughout as are the few moments of bombastic and spectacular action taking place. Also, I should add that I absolutely love the fact that "mutants" and "powers" are not terms that are constantly thrown at the audience for the sake of marketing the comic book components of the show. They're utilized in an organic and sparing fashion which is something that I can really appreciate and admire especially for a newcomer in the genre.
Overall, this was a magnificent pilot as it immediately hooked me into this world of insanity and intrigue while making me feel truly invested in the core roster of characters. I simply cannot wait to see what comes next for what is already shaping up to be a highly imaginative and engrossing series. Being that this is indeed set in the X-Men universe, one can only speculate and geek out over the potential mutant appearances in the future. Fingers crossed for a Patrick Stewart cameo.
Episode Rating: 9/10
